The Thing 2 RPG v2.5.2

Here is an update for the game, It’s just a bunch of fixes.

This ‘Traditional Style’ Sci-Fi RPG is a “Non-Profit” Fan Made game based on the events after the 1982 movie “The Thing” created by John Carpenter. It is in no way endorsed by John Carpenter or Universal Studios and shares likeness only in name. In my eyes it is the same as drawing a picture of a popular character and posting it online for all to see. I funded this game with my own money and I do not generate any revenue from ModDB or the ads displayed on my website (which I also pay for). If there are grounds for an issue with copyright then I am willing to take responsibility for that and make the appropriate changes where needed to resolve the issue. The Majority of the content (music, artwork, code) in the game is either licensed for use, originally created or credit is given where due for work used in ‘Free’ projects.

System Specs

Since the v1 there have been massive improvements to overall performance. I believe the game will run on a wide range of Windows Computers now and the v2 tanks far less in comparison to the v1. Below are the recommended specs based on those provided by the RPG Maker Team. (Official Specs)

OS: Windows XP or later
CPU: Intel® Pentium® 4 2.0 GHz equivalent or faster processor
Storage: 400mb

Please note that previous version(s) saves may not work with the v2.5 Build.

Thing2 RPG PLAY “Test Build 6” / “Lite Build 2”

Over the course of the past 4 months or so I have been doing private test builds to iron out the game as much as possible before general release. I have decided that I need to expand on my feedback and criticism as much as I can so while I am working on the game hopefully people will play what I have already done and tell me what they think. I don’t think everyone will like it but I would appreciate it if you kept snide remarks to yourselves.

At the bottom of this post you will find the links (mediafire) to various builds of the game. Please read the rest of this post carefully to understand what BUILD you need and what game play has been completed so far.

Build Information

Test Build 6
This is the regular / standard build of the game. It is the recommended Build for players.
If you have a slower computer or older computer then I would advise you get the Lite Build.

Lite Build 2
Less tested than the Regular build but should work fine. This build is best for players with older machines as it is less laggy.
Please be aware that the lite build disables dynamic lighting (so some junction boxes may become redundant) and also be aware that Torches and Flares DO NOT work because they are disabled due to the removal of the dynamic lighting function.

Game Modes

There are 5 major game modes in the game.
When you select “New Game” you will be met by a pre-loader and then you will be offered the TUTORIAL MODE. Please play this, especially if you did not play the first game. It will teach you all the basics of the game. I also want to note that there is a command in the menu called FIELD GUIDE please reference this for in game help / tutorials on the fly.

Breakdown of Game Modes

Story Mode
The main game story, I have only just finished making the intro chapters (about 30 mins gameplay) so you may find that your progress is halted when you reach the Field Base. Please try it and tell me what you think, it is an original story of my own and I hope it makes sense.

Original Mode
A complete remake of the first game. With all the new gameplay features and an extended story. This mode is 100% complete and takes around 10 hours to finish. It has 12 Levels and please tell me if you make it past Level 9 “Airstrip” as none of my testers have passed this point. Also note that this is the main mode that has been tested so a lot of the game tweaking is according to how this mode plays.

Survival Mode
Survival mode IS NOT started. It will send you to the TEST MAP

Extra Content
Reserved for DLC. Extra Content Mode IS NOT started. It will send you to the TEST MAP

Test Map
Built for my use mainly. You may find that things do not make sense on it, just play around with it.

Read Dead Redemption, The Breed & The Thing

So Red Dead Redemption is a good game. Finally got it, Game of the Year Edition and it is awesome. If anyone has seen any good westerns (such as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly as well as the rest of that trilogy) then like me you will be living out a lot of childhood dreams. I have been following the story but I just find myself roaming off trying to be some random vigilante and the environment is so beautiful. It gives the illusion of being in an actual desert.

I recently played Dragon Age 2 but… Well the first one was better. Not that 2 didn’t have good features. The companion system is way better and the combat has some improvements but with bio ware I am a big fan of their older works. Sometimes I still make a play through of Jade Empire or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. But they do have that whole format/genre of RPG nailed down really well. Another Jade Empire would be a big win with me <3

I like to watch really random films and I recently watched “The Breed“. Bare with me now, it wasn’t all bad. Sure it was just another horror film but it had some good plot elements to it. It actually inspired me to write up an idea for a short repeatable RPG on an Island but we will see if I get around to that. It would be like a Choose your Own Adventure. Those books were cool.

As for the Thing 2 I am now on level 10 of 12 for Original Mode. I started work in September 2011 on a sequel to a quick RPG I made in 2010 which did way better than I thought. Anyway the original plan was to make a Tactical RPG style game but when Vx Ace came out in March (well before when i saw it really) I knew that I just had to use that. The game has come a long way and I fell short with a October 2012 release. I am trying my best to do it right and in between going to work and other stuff I only get 3 days a week to work on it. Granted I don’t work on it for 24 hours a day either, more likely around 4 to 6, sometimes 8 if i am in the zone. Anyway as it looks the game in my opinion is pretty good. I enjoy playing it, it is a fight for survival and it is well very hard. I have Story Mode, Survival Mode and the Foundations for Extra Content / DLC Mode to do (after Original Mode) so it may take a while. It is nearly coming to the date the project was first started (15th March) which will mark 1 year in development. What I have done so far does not look like a years work but these things take time. I hope to have Story Mode done by the end of May. Then what is left should not take too long, I want to say October 2013 release date but.. I’m not going to put a deadline down here.

“Lite” Version

For people with older CPU like me I will be releasing a lite version of the game. It will be exactly the same as the full game but without the dynamic lighting effects. Optimum FPS in RPG Maker is 60. On my CPU I get 20 – 30, sometimes even less than 15 FPS which is causing the game to run slow and choppy. I have implemented scaffolding for a “Lite” Version and in testing it gives me around 50 FPS to 55 FPS which is far better than what I have now.

The Dynamic Lighting in the game is thanks to a script by Khas (Here) and is very impressive.

In the “Lite” Version the lighting will be very basic and controlled by Tinting the In Game Screen. Flares and Torch effects will no longer work in the Lite version and when used will do nothing. Also in game lights such as CPU Screen monitors, Light from Fire or Light from Objects on Walls will no longer appear, effectively being reduced to just scenery.
